Opportunities for Mitigating Soil Compaction in Europe—Case Studies from the SoilCare Project Using Soil-Improving Cropping Systems

چکیده
Soil compaction (SC) is a major threat for agriculture in Europe that affects many ecosystem functions, such as water and air circulation soils, root growth, crop production. Our objective was to present the results from five short-term (<5 years) case studies located along north–south east–west gradients conducted within SoilCare project using soil-improving cropping systems (SICSs) mitigating topsoil subsoil SC. Two study sites (SSs) focused on natural (?25 cm) subsoiling tillage treatments depths of 35 cm (Sweden) 60 (Romania). The other SSs addressed both SC cm, Norway United Kingdom; ?30 Italy) deep-rooted bio-drilling crops different types or combination both. Each SS evaluated effectiveness SICSs by measuring soil physical properties, we calculated indices. showed promising results—for example, alfalfa good potential alleviating (the density decreased 1.69 1.45 g cm?1) at Swedish improved penetration into about 10 cm—but effects yields were generally small. These also reflected difficulties implementing SICSs, some which are under development, discuss methodological issues their effectiveness. There need refining these evaluating longer-term effect wider range pedoclimatic conditions.

ISSN 1401-6249, ISBN 91-576-6769-1 This thesis deals with various aspects of soil compaction due to agricultural field traffic, the draught force requirement of tillage implements and soil structures produced by tillage. Several field experiments were carried out to study the mechanic...

Grass cropping in the rotation and the use of no-till seeding appear to be important components for developing sustainable cropping systems. Grass cropping and no-till seeding improve soil organic matter content, increase the soil microbial biomass, increase earthworm numbers, likely cause a buildup of fungivorous microarthropods and nematodes, and greatly increases the resistance of soil to er...
متن کاملSoil physical properties, soil carbon dioxide fluxes, and soil drainage dynamics of select bioenergy cropping systems
Bioenergy cropping systems have been proposed as a way to enhance United States energy security. However, research on soil physical properties, soil-surface CO2 effluxes, and soil drainage dynamics in such systems is needed to ensure environmental sustainability in the field. The objective of our research was to evaluate soil physical properties and conditions as well as soil-surface CO2 efflux...
متن کاملCropping systems, tillage and fertilization strategies for durum wheat performance and soil properties
Many sustainable agronomical practices can be adopted to contain environmental risks of crop production and, at the same time, sustain yield and quality. In this framework, the aim of this research was to study the effects of continuous cropping (CC) and crop rotation, tillage and fertilization strategies on durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) production. The responses of soil properties we...
